Map of StationsThe station in Rwanda has been designated as an AfricaArray station and will be upgraded with a 24 bit datalogger/digitizer and a broadband sensor in 2006-2007. Seismograph Station SummaryThe location and code of the station in Kigali, the first seismological station of the Geological Survey of Rwanda (GSR).
A Helicorder Model RV-301B recording instrument together with a Marks Products L-4C vertical, short period, single component seismometer (shown below) have been installed in Kigali. A helicorder is an old but reliable instrument, which produces an accurate twenty-four hour, continuous paper record. The Helicorder uses a heating stylus on heat-sensitive paper, which eliminates the maintenance, associated with an ink writing stylus. Curvilinear pen provides typical, 100 mm of deflection with a sensitivity of 1 mV/mm (with the AR-320B Amplifier). In order to allow the operator to synchronize the timing unit of the Helicorder according to GMT, a Garmin XL-45 12 channel GPS receiver was installed. The system is fully operational from a 12-Volt backup battery, connected to a regulator and battery charger, to keep the system operational during the many power failures.
